John Joe MacNeil is a Gaelic singer, conductor, educator and cultural leader from Barra in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. A fluent Gaelic speaker, he is widely respected for his contributions to traditional music, winning the Royal National Mòd Traditional Medal in 2017 and Gold Medal in 2021.
He conducts leading choirs, including Binneas – a Gaelic collective of 16 youth voices, and is also the conductor of Còisir Ghàidhlig Bharraigh (Barra Gaelic Choir). Previously, he was a member of Inverness Gaelic Choir, Glasgow Islay Gaelic Choir, Lochaber Gaelic Choir and Oban Gaelic Choir for ten years, and conducted Oban Gaelic Choir ladies for a number of years.
During his time in Glasgow, he also performed with various classical choirs. Alongside his musical work, he has held senior roles in Gaelic education and now works as a freelance consultant across leadership, broadcasting and community initiatives, promoting and preserving Gaelic language, heritage and culture.
