Song Leader Visits

Home EventsSong Leader Visits

The sign up form to apply for a Song Leader Visit place is at the end of this page. Please read this information carefully and check the FAQs before you apply.

Overview

This is a funded professional development opportunity, where song leaders can apply to visit another leader to observe them and learn from their work and practice. The content or theme of the visit will be individual to the learning needs of the visitor.

To apply, you will be a song leader already working with a singing group or choir in Scotland.

The person you would like to visit doesn’t need to be based in Scotland, however please note the travel budget below.

Fees & expenses

We will pay visitors a fee of £110
We will pay hosts a fee of £55

We have budgeted for up to £75 travel per visit, and that 10 visitors might require overnight accommodation costing up to £175. Our mileage reimbursement is 45p per mile, but please use sustainable travel methods where possible. If you require an overnight hotel stay, please tell us in advance, preferably when you sign up, so that we do not go over our budget.

This fee structure assumes that the host will not need to prepare anything additional for the visitor, but will meet up with them for a discussion of around one hour in duration.

Our budget enables us to offer 20 visits before the end of  March, however if this proves a popular part of the programme we can revise how much budget is allocated to it for future years. We are initially offering one paid visit per person.

FAQs

I am based in Scotland but not a member of your network, can I apply for a Song Leader visit?

We only offer funded visits to Scotland Sings network members. If you are a Scotland-based song leader, you can join the network for free, then apply for your visit.

I’m not sure if I am a member of the Scotland Sings network…

Most of our members are listed on the network members page, however some people choose not to share their details online. If your name isn’t on the page, and you think you’ve signed up but aren’t sure, please fill in the form again or contact us by email and we’ll check our database. It’s free to join the network and should only take a few minutes.

Can I undertake more than one Song Leader visit?

We would like to support as many visits as our budget allows, but will prioritise new applicants for visits in the first three years of the programme. The Scotland Sings membership will be notified via our monthly newsletter if we have an underspend in this area and can offer any additional visits.

I lead a singing group which is part of an organisation, can I apply for a visit?

It depends. This opportunity is designed for freelance song leaders who don’t have support from elsewhere to develop their practice. If you work for an organisation, it is likely that they should be supporting you to develop your skills through training. Please give as much detail as you can about your situation on your booking form.

I want to visit a Song Leader at one of Scotland’s National Performing Companies, will they get a host fee?

We can support your visit to a National Performing Company as a freelance practitioner, but they will not receive a host fee. The host fee supports freelance song leaders who are not supported by an organisation.

Can I visit a Song Leader outside of Scotland?

If we cannot find a song leader with suitable expertise for your visit request within Scotland, we will look together at finding a leader elsewhere, on a case by case basis.

Can I visit a Song Leader who also leads for an organisation I work with?

No, we cannot fund a visit between two leaders who are working for the same organisation. The programme is designed for self-supporting freelance leaders. You should encourage the organisation you are working with to support your professional development in this way.

Can I bring someone else with me to my Song Leader visit?

If you need to take another person with you to support your visit, please let us know on the form. Our budget is designed to support an individual to visit to another individual, however we will support access costs agreed in advance.

I am based outside of Scotland, can I apply for a Song Leader visit?

No. Scotland Sings is a sector-led project for and by Scotland’s song leaders. Its funding supports those working for the benefit of people in Scotland.

Agreement

By signing up to be a visitor, you agree to:

  • Organise the visit directly with your host and tell Love Music when it is happening.
  • Take at least one photograph or short video showing your visit – please comply with media permissions policies at the group you visit.
  • Fill in a short form after your visit to provide data for our funders.
  • Write a short report on your experience and what you learned and send it to Love Music after the visit has taken place. These written accounts will be shared for the benefit of network members, for our evaluation programme development, and to publicise the programme. If this is something you’d struggle with, don’t be put off – we can provide you with some questions to guide your writing or can interview you, or you could record a video report instead. We’ll always proof anything before publishing.
Love Music:

  • Will provide funds as per the information above, following an invoice which details any expenses to be claimed with receipts attached.
  • If you don’t already know the person you’d like to visit, we’ll ask the person’s permission for you to visit, and if they are happy to host you, we’ll introduce you via email so that you can organise your visit directly.
  • If the person you want to visit isn’t available, we’ll suggest alternatives based on your expression of your needs.
  • Will share your stories on our websites and/or social media (with your permission).
  • Will help answer any questions or concerns and action those where appropriate.
