We sing because it makes us feel good! Freedom Of Mind Community Choir is a non-audition, inclusive choir based in Falkirk. We sing for the physical, social and emotional benefits – and whether performing in concert halls or care homes, we try to spread joy through song!
Right now, we’re singing online and in person on Wednesday afternoons, with our two Music Directors Mariot Dallas and songwriter Kim Edgar in Tamfourhill Community Hub. We use masks, distancing and regular ventilation breaks to keep us all as safe as possible during in person sessions.
With support from Creative Scotland, we became an independent community choir in April 2019. We just completed a crowdfunding campaign to make sure every choir member can access our online sessions through a digital device library – we’re grateful for the generous support we’ve received!
Here’s our song, Singing Helps Me Breathe, in partnership with Camelon Arts, filmmaker Jassy Earl and producer Mattie Foulds: https://youtu.be/amx1DfONC3U. Choir members wrote the lyrics and Kim Edgar wrote the music. We’re a creative bunch of people! Several members play instruments to accompany live performances, and a few have written lyrics for new songs we’ve created in collaboration with our Music Directors. All members contribute ideas for our repertoire of folk, world, and pop songs, designed to comfort and uplift both ourselves and our audiences.
Mariot Dallas told us: “We’re very excited about taking part in the Love Singing project – our members will relish the opportunity to be creative, and to work with a professional songwriter at this time to further enhance the repertoire for Scotland’s thriving choral scene.” Kim Edgar added: “Connecting with others who’re as passionate about group singing as we are at this time is going to be a delight – we can’t wait to get started!”
